They drove for quite some time, and while they did, the strange sickness that had been so horrible just a short time ago passed. Aaron was still tired, but he felt fine, otherwise. How could he be about to die?

“I’m so confused,” he whispered, and he wanted, more than anything, for Orlando to reach over and touch him. Of course, he didn’t think that would really happen, since Orlando had been so reserved, but then he felt a hand on his leg.

Not lecherous, for once, but deeply comforting. Aaron took that hand in his and held it, clinging to it for dear life.

It was hard to know what to think. He should be angry, he supposed. He should feel betrayed by this man that he had fallen far too hard for. Mostly, though, he was just sad and confused and scared.

They drove away from town and Aaron was surprised by how quickly the buildings gave way to trees. It had been a long time since he’d been out of the city, and it was a bit unnerving to drive under the canopy of green.

Where were they going, anyway? They drove and drove, and on roads that got rougher as they went. Eventually, they were on rough gravel roads that bounced the car horribly and made Aaron very glad that his nausea had already passed for the day.

Eventually, the car stopped and Aaron looked around. There were trees everywhere, he noticed. In fact, other than the tiny road that they’d driven up on, and a small path that led off between the trunks of the trees, there was nothing but trees as far as Aaron could see.

“We’re going to walk a little bit,” Orlando said. “Can you handle that?”

Aaron tilted his chin up. Maybe he was somehow dying, but he wasn’t on his last legs yet, he decided. He slid out of the car and stood on his own two legs, which were a bit wobbly but he could handle it.

Orlando smiled at him a little bit, seeing his determination, clearly. He turned and walked into the woods, and Aaron really had no choice but to follow him.

What was this thing that Orlando was so insistent on showing him, anyway?
